Ordinary to Extraordinary: Creativity
Today, consider taking a photo of something "ordinary" about your life. Then write about that moment and take time to thank God for the ordinary. Because through God's provision, the ordinary is extraordinary.
Jessica Turner, The Mom Creative
Out of the ordinary something extraordinary happens.
Healing. Friendship. Love.
I won't spoil the plot for you, but this movie has transformed my way of thinking about how ordinary people, who live ordinary lives made up of ordinary moments can make an extraordinary difference in the heart of someone.
I want that. I want to live a life out of the spotlight of extraordinary, according to our culture's standards, and live a life making the most of the ordinary God-given moments.
A few definitions of ordinary are customary, usual, normal, of no special quality or interest. We tried to have one of those ordinary summers this year. No big trips planned, just a few days away here and there. Instead, we took each letter of the alphabet and did an activity that began with the corresponding letter, bringing intentionality into our ordinary family moments. In this blog series I'll share those moments, beginning today with XYZ.
I'm not going to say that those ordinary moments became extraordinary. Because they didn't, at least not yet. But in reflecting back I see a glimpse of the extraordinary. The extraordinary divine design of a Creator who sculpts and molds both mind and body creating in each of us a blueprint, His own architectural masterpieces. And what blows me away is the creativity in which love comes down upon each one of us.
As the creative design of each of my family members emerged throughout the summer, I began to see the extraordinary work of the Creator differently. There is no one size fits all in parenting three separate architectural masterpieces and loving them well needs to be done just as creatively. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, passions and aversions. It is those ordinary moments of expressions and activities and choices where we can make an extraordinary difference in loving well, in affirming their design. Our words, creatively chosen for each of them, encourages and serves as a reminder of all they could be as they grow into their divine design, an extraordinary creation.
This weekend I am expecting the ordinary. An ordinary birthday party, an ordinary Sunday school class, an ordinary trip to the store. But because God is the the creative writer of each of our stories, He may have something extraordinary in mind for those ordinary moments. Will you look for the extraordinary in the ordinary with me this weekend?
May the magic of ordinary days begin it's transforming work in your heart, mind and spirit!
Blessings,
Rachael
