The other day I was listening to a commentary on a chapter in the Bible and the speaker asked this multiple-choice question that got me thinking. The question was:
What is most important to you?
a. to get into heaven
b. to serve God
c. to do God’s will
d. to know God more
So what do you think? Take the time to answer honestly before continuing.
The chapter of the Bible I was studying was 1 John. John writes as a witness to Christ’s life here on earth. His desire to share the message of life that Christ taught comes shining through this book.
“We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”
1 John 1:3
Getting into heaven is a good goal, but what are we supposed to do between now and then? Serving is important but if serving is our driving force we will eventually crash and burn. Honestly, God doesn’t really “need” us to do it all. Are you living in God’s will? That is a good diagnostic question to ask of all areas of our lives but what happens when the answer is “yes”? Then what?
There is a correct answer to the question above and that is to know God more.
How are you getting to know God more this Lenten season?
Are you taking the time to fellowship with God, to cultivate your relationship with him?
In the Old Testament fellowship offerings were required of God’s people.
Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.
Judges 21:4
God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. I Corinthians 1:9
Just as a seed is broken in the darkness, it is the light that draws that brokenness out and grows something new. Beauty blossoms when exposed to the light.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
1 John 1:5-7
Could your relationship with God use some amending?
Fellowship with Christ by reading the Word, meditating on a verse or a story and asking God how it applies to your life, will lead to a better understanding of who God is. And knowing God leads to knowing His grace over you, His love in you, His forgiveness for your sin, and His peace within.
Are you still looking for your purpose? Your purpose for this season will be exposed if you are willing to cultivate fellowship with Christ into your daily routine. Begin amending your relationship with God today as you seek to get to know God more.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
2 Corinthians 13: 14
Dear God, give me a desire to get to know you more. Through fellowship with your Word help me to cultivate a deeper relationship with You, to know you more and understand the depth of your love, grace, peace and forgiveness you desire for me to understand. Expose areas in our relationship that need amending. Shine your light in me so I can be a light in this world.
Blessings,
Rachael
